Newcastle Fringe Festival

Newcastle Fringe Festival is running 27th July - 7th August 2021 at Alphabetti Theatre and we are celebrating the best of visiting and local talent from across the North and around the UK in the two week programme. The line-up of theatre shows, films, creative industry events and workshops will be presented to audiences as a blend of in-person live and streamed online.

What is the D’Addario Stage?

As part of the festival we are running a programme on The D’Addario Stage in the Alphabetti Theatre bar - a “Free Fringe” style platform, dedicated to presenting the work of local artists. The platform offers local artists the opportunity to share their work in Alphabetti Theatre to a live audience and online.

This is a “Free Fringe” style platform which means that it will work on a Pay What You Feel donation basis for audiences. Newcastle Fringe Festival will provide the space and the live stream at no charge and any donations from the audience will go directly to the artist. No splits, no costs, no catches. 100% of whatever the audience donates goes directly to you.

The D’Addario Stage is on the ground floor of Alphabetti and has a ramp to the performance platform. Toilets are also situated on the ground floor.

What kind of work are we looking for?

We will consider anything from artists based in the North East (Teesside up to Berwick) and as long as it is suitable for the playing space. Performance slots are 30 minutes each.

The D’Addario Stage is a small, speak-easy style stage in the Alphabetti Theatre bar that is best suited to cabaret-style performances. It is the perfect platform for artists wanting to present stand-up comedy, spoken word, poetry, cabaret acts or live music. It is an intimate space for intimate work.

If your piece has more than one or two performers, or relies heavily on a lot of tech, this might not be the right space for you. There is a baby-grand piano available.

How to apply

If you think you have a piece that would fit well on The D’Addario Stage at Newcastle Fringe Festival, then send a short paragraph (no more than 250 words) to telling us about the piece and what audiences should expect.

You should also send us some links to your work (videos, images, websites) so we can get an idea of what it might look like. It would be brilliant if you can include a video clip of the work you want to present, even if this is still in development and captured on a smartphone.

We will consider all applications but are particularly interested in hearing from those who feel underrepresented in the creative industries. Please let us know if you have any access requirements.

Deadline for applications: Monday 14th June, midnight

  • Will there be technical support?

    • This is a self- sufficient performance space. There will lights (general wash) and a microphone if you need it but there is no tech desk or tech support for the actual performance. The online live-stream element will be facilitated by one of our festival team so you don’t need to worry about that side of things.

  • Will I there be marketing support?

    • We will advertise acts as part of our festival marketing strategy across all of our channels and social media. We want as many people as possible to see your work, but each individual artist will be encouraged to advertise to their own audiences and followers as well. The more people who tune in, the more donations for you!

  • How many performance slots are there?

    • There are 10 performance slots, one for each night of the festival across two weeks (Tues-Sat).

  • Can I apply for longer than a 30-minute slot?

    • No. Each slot is timed so that it doesn’t clash with the other performances and activity in the festival. We don’t want you to miss out on audiences, so artists will have to stick to their individual 30-minute slot.
